Public Protection: a responsibility for both CRC and NPS staff

Both organisations have Public Protection as their prime responsibility. The day-to-day management of offenders identified as posing specific risks falls to the NPS. Every offender under the supervision of National Probation Service staff is carefully assessed to determine the likelihood of them re-offending and the risk of harm to the public that is likely to result from further offences. This assessment is kept under regular review as attitudes, behaviour and circumstances can change over time. Where a risk of serious harm to the public is identified, a plan is put in place to manage that risk, often involving working closely with other relevant agencies.
